Coal plants installed mercury controls to meet compliance deadlines – American Journal of Transportation

Based on data recently published in EIA’s preliminary annual electric generator survey, several coal-fired electricity generators in the United States installed mercury control equipment using activated carbon injection systems just prior to compliance deadlines. The nature and timing of control additions indicate a strategy to maintain the availability of affected coal-fired generators by requesting extensions to compliance deadlines and investing in flexible, low-cost environmental control technology.
At the end of 2011, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced standards to limit mercury, acid gases, and other toxic pollution from power plants. EPA’s final ruling, called the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS), was released on February 16, 2012. MATS required all coal- and oil-fired generators that sell power and have a capacity greater than 25 megawatts (MW) to comply with emissions limits for toxic air pollutants associated with fuel combustion such as mercury, arsenic, and heavy metals. At the time, the rule applied to 76% of all operating coal units, which represented 99% of generating capacity. The initial compliance deadline was April 16, 2015.

Between January 2015 and April 2016, about 87 GW of coal-fired plants installed pollution-control equipment, and nearly 20 GW of coal capacity retired. About 26% of those retirements occurred in April 2015, meeting the MATS rule’s initial compliance date. According to analysis by MJ Bradley & Associates, 142 GW of coal plants had applied for and received one-year extensions that allowed them to operate until April 2016 while finalizing compliance strategies.
An additional one-year extension to April 2017 was granted to a few units critical to ensuring electric reliability. Five coal plants with a combined capacity 2.3 GW received this extension. Since then, two of the five plants have retired, one converted to natural gas, and one installed MATS-compliant controls. The remaining plant, Oklahoma’s Grand River Energy Center, was given another emergency extension for reliability issues in April.

Of the coal capacity installing pollution control equipment to comply with MATS, activated carbon injection (ACI) was the dominant compliance strategy, with close to 78 GWs of coal capacity adding ACI. Activated carbon injection systems work by injecting powdered activated carbon into the flue stack (exhaust) of a coal-fired power plant. This powered activated carbon then absorbs the vaporized mercury from the flue gas and is collected from the plant’s particulate collection device. Activated carbon is a carbonaceous, highly porous adsorptive medium that has a complex structure composed primarily of carbon atoms

ACI technologies have the shortest construction lead time of the compliance control technologies—between 12 and 18 months— and the lowest installation cost—about $11 per kilowatt (kW). Other technologies, such as electrostatic precipitators (ESP) and baghouses have longer lead times and higher costs. Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) has the highest average lead time, at 50 months, and the highest installation cost, at $228/kW.

Environmental control technologies vary in terms of what air pollutants they remove. For example, FGD technologies can control mercury, sulfur dioxide, and acid gases, whereas ESPs can control mercury, non-mercury metals, and acid gases.

Calgon Carbon (CCC) Wins $2.3M Water Treatment Contract – Nasdaq

Calgon Carbon Corporation CCC and RC Foster Corporation have inked a system supply contract worth $2.3 million under which the former will provide granular activated carbon (GAC) and related equipment systems for the removal of 1,2,3-Trichloropropane (1,2,3-TCP) from groundwater in the city of Chino, CA.

Per the terms of the deal, Calgon Carbon will supply 320,000 pounds of Filtrasorb 400 GAC and 16 GAC adsorption vessels to the Eastside Treatment Plant and the Benson Treatment Plant. These systems, at each site, will treat up to 5 million gallons of water per day.

Calgon Carbon, a pioneer in activated carbon treatment technologies and contaminant removal, has over three decades of experience in providing GAC adsorption systems, which helps to remove 1,2,3-TCP from water. It is touted to be the Best Available Technology (BAT) for 1,2,3-TCP treatment.

Notably,in 1992, pursuant to Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, 1,2,3-TCP – a colorless, manmade, chlorinated hydrocarbon – was added to the list of chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer. In July, the California State Water Resources Control Board adopted a maximum contaminant level (MCL) for 1,2,3-TCP of 5 parts per trillion.

According to RC Foster Corporation, the installation of GAC adsorption systems will help the city of Chino to meet the new MCL standards.

Price Performance

Shares of Calgon Carbon have declined 6.1% in the last six months versus the 1.7% growth of its  industry .

Q2 Performance & Outlook

Calgon Carbon reported net income of $5.9 million or 12 cents per share in second-quarter 2017, compared with a profit of $7.9 million or 15 cents per share recorded a year ago. Barring one-time items, adjusted earnings were 14 cents per share that were in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate.

Net sales increased around 15.4% year over year to $153 million, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $150.6 million.

Calgon Carbon, in its second-quarter earnings call, noted that its performance benefited from improved year-over-year demand of activated carbon products and services, steady execution from New Business to achieve robust quarterly sales growth and the company’s diverse end markets. The company is also optimistic about its industrial sector customers.

Calgon Carbon expects sales and profitability to improve in the second half of 2017. The company also expects growth in its legacy business sales for the full year, which is expected to benefit from improved demand of activated carbon products in North America.

Calgon Carbon Awarded $2.3 Million Water Treatment Contract for Removal of 1,2,3-TCP – Business Wire (press release)

PITTSBURGH–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Calgon Carbon Corporation (NYSE:CCC) (Calgon Carbon or the Company) announced today that the Company and RC Foster Corporation have signed a system supply contract valued at $2.3 million, under which Calgon Carbon will provide granular activated carbon (GAC) and associated equipment systems for the removal of 1,2,3-Trichloropropane (1,2,3-TCP) from groundwater in the city of Chino, CA.

Under the terms of the contract, Calgon Carbon will supply a total of 16 GAC adsorption vessels and 320,000 pounds of Filtrasorb® 400 GAC to the Benson Treatment Plant and the Eastside Treatment Plant. The systems will treat up to 5 million gallons of water per day at each site.

“Calgon Carbon has more than 30 years experience in providing GAC adsorption systems to water providers, and we are honored to have been selected by RC Foster Corporation to be its granular activated carbon and equipment supplier for this important project,” said Nora Stockhausen, VP of the Municipal and Reactivation Business Unit.

GAC removes 1,2,3-TCP from water through a process called adsorption. GAC is expected to be the Best Available Technology (BAT) for 1,2,3-TCP treatment.

1,2,3–TCP is a manmade, colorless, chlorinated hydrocarbon that was found in soil fumigants commonly used in California prior to the 1990s. 1,2,3-TCP causes cancer in laboratory animals (U.S. EPA, 2009). In 1992, the state of California added 1,2,3-TCP to the list of chemicals known to the state to cause cancer, pursuant to California’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act.

The compound is currently not regulated by the U.S. EPA, although it is on the Contaminant Candidate List 4 for future regulation. On March 3, 2017, the California State Water Resources Control Board proposed a draft maximum contaminant level (MCL) for 1,2,3-TCP of 5 parts per trillion. The State Water Board adopted the proposed 1,2,3-TCP regulations in July 2017.

Calgon Carbon (CCC) Down 17.4% Since Earnings Report: Can It Rebound? – Nasdaq

It has been about a month since the last earnings report for Calgon Carbon Corporation CCC . Shares have lost about 17.4% in that time frame, underperforming the market.

Will the recent negative trend continue leading up to the stock’s next earnings release, or is it due for a breakout? Before we dive into how investors and analysts have reacted as of late, let’s take a quick look at its most recent earnings report in order to get a better handle on the important drivers.

Calgon Carbon Q2 Earnings in Line, Sales Top Estimates

Calgon Carbon reported net income of $5.9 million or 12 cents per share in second-quarter 2017, compared with a profit of $7.9 million or 15 cents per share recorded a year ago.

Barring one-time items, adjusted earnings were 14 cents per share that were in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate.

Calgon Carbon recorded net sales of $153 million in the reported quarter, up around 15.4% year over year. The figure beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $150.6 million.

The increase in sales was mainly due to contribution of the New Business (the wood-based activated carbon and filtration media business) which was acquired in Nov 2016.

Segment Performance

Revenues from the company’s core Activated Carbon segment increased 9.8% year over year to $135.7 million in the reported quarter. The increase was mainly due to higher net sales of environmental air (which includes mercury removal products), potable water, industrial and specialty processes market in the Americas, which more than offset the estimated lower anticipated activated carbon pellet sales in Japan for treating nitrogen oxide and sulfur emissions, lower sales of potable water market in Europe and lower environmental water market sales in the Americas due to the completion of a major remediation project in 2016.

The Alternative Material segment’s revenues increased around five-fold year over year to $12.9 million as the perlite filtration and diatomaceous earth media products of New Business contributed $11 million to reported quarter sales.

Sales from the Advanced Water Purification segment declined 31.2% year over year to $4.4 million in the quarter due to lower traditional ultraviolet water disinfection equipment and ion exchange project sales, partly offset by modestly higher sales of ballast water treatment system.

Financial Position

Calgon Carbon ended the quarter with cash and cash equivalents of roughly $24.1 million, down roughly 52.9% year over year. Long-term debt was $241.4 million, up roughly 137.6% year over year.

Outlook

According to Calgon Carbon, second-quarter 2017 performance benefited from improved year-over-year demand of activated carbon products and services, steady execution from New Business to achieve robust quarterly sales growth and the company’s diverse end markets. The company is also optimistic about its industrial sector customers.

Moving ahead, Calgon Carbon expects sequential improvement in gross margin and operating expense. The company expects sales and profitability to improve in the second half of 2017. The company also sees growth in its legacy business sales for the full year, which is expected to benefit from improved demand of activated carbon products in North America.  

How Have Estimates Been Moving Since Then?

Following the release, investors have witnessed a downward trend in fresh estimates. There have been three revisions lower for the current quarter. In the past month, the consensus estimate has shifted down by 13.9% due to these changes.
